How to feed a turtle? 

To ensure the well-being and health of the turtle, it must benefit from a diversified turtle diet, less fat and protein, but enriched with minerals (calcium and phosphorus) which promote optimal growth of juvenile turtles and good calcification of the shell. 

To feed a tortoise, you can therefore give vegetables and fruits (strawberries, raspberries, apricots, apples, bananas, oranges, mangoes, sweet potatoes, leeks, bean sprouts, tomatoes, grated carrots, squash, melon, zucchini, cucumber). And supplement its diet with a balanced Hermann tortoise food specifically designed to provide the proportion of calcium, phosphorus and vitamins it needs for its health, growth and shell rigidity. 

Be careful, tortoise food should contain 2 to 4 times more calcium than phosphorus. In fact, if you have a calcium deficiency and Hermann's tortoise food is too rich in phosphorus, you expose your Hermann's tortoise to a bone disease called nutritional osteofibrosis and to reproductive problems. 

It should be noted that the roof must be fed in its food dispenser 5 to 6 times a week. So you should give him 1 or 2 days of “diet”. 

What foods are prohibited for turtles?

Certain foods should not be given to tortoises, such as: Brussels sprouts, corn, peas, cauliflower, lettuce, bread in milk, chocolate, overly sweet foods, sugar, rice, potatoes, cheese, artichokes, and foods intended for dogs, cats, and ferrets. These foods should therefore be crossed off the tortoise food chart.

What food for turtles?

As you can see, a turtle's diet must be rich in vitamins (A, B, C, and D), phosphorus, and calcium to stimulate the turtle's digestive system and promote its body's growth. It is therefore essential to consider the composition of your turtle food when making a choice. Keep in mind that the meals provided must promote the well-being and health of your pet. 

If you have an aquatic turtle, its diet should consist of fish and/or crustaceans like this nutrient-rich water turtle food (made up of small crustaceans, mollusks and fetal crustaceans, fish meal, etc.). If you have a herbivorous land turtle, opt for a food rich in calcium and protein.
